Robert McLay represents clients in a variety of areas.  The scope of his practice encompasses commercial contract disputes, financial transactions, various types of insurance claims, and consumer protection act violations. His primary focus relates to insurance coverage and insurance bad faith.

From 2015 through 2023, Robert has been selected to the Northern California Super Lawyers list. This recognition is reserved for the top 5% of attorneys in the entire state.

He is a very experienced trial lawyer.  He has tried cases in the counties of Alameda, Calaveras, King, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Multnomah, Orange, Placer, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, and Pierce. He also has extensive experience in a variety of arbitration formats.

In addition to his federal and state trial practice, he has also successfully argued appeals before the First and Third District Courts of Appeal in California and the Nevada Supreme Court.

He has passed the California Department of Real Estate Broker's license and provided legal advice to real estate brokers and real estate agents in disclosure and standard of care issues.

Robert McLay is licensed to practice as an attorney not only in California, but also in Washington, New Mexico, and the District of Columbia. He has also been admitted and handled cases pro hac vice.

He is also licensed in all of the federal courts of California, Washington, and New Mexico, as well as in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.
